WEEK 43: JOSE OLAYA
July 30, 2019
Yeah we out here in Jose Olaya, and I'm with my companion, Elder Navarrete. We are gonna kill it here. He came here from a change of an emergency transfer about three weeks ago, so we are both going to have to get to know the area and the members here.
But we had a super good day, found some good contacts, had some good lessons, and our district is way tight. We are kind of hurting for people to teach, but they will start to come. I am really grateful for this ward already, they are so good at supporting us. We have some people with a date for baptism, and we are feeling pretty good about everything. We have a young woman we are teaching who wants to get baptized, but her mom is against the church and won't sign for permission. So we are going to be praying for that.
Everyone here was saying my Spanish is really good, but the only one that deserves the credit is mi Papa Dios, because He has given me that ability. I love to see how God gives us opportunities to find people to teach. Sometimes you have to leave your comfort zone and do hard things, but God always has your back.

So we had a really sick experience this week with the young hermana that I wrote about before. She has 17 years and comes from a family that goes to another church. She couldn't get baptized because her mom wouldn't sign the paper giving her permission. The other Elders before us had been trying to get her mom to sign for a really long time but with no success, so we were praying really hard for a chance to talk to her about it. Actually, her mom wouldn't even talk to the other Elders, but we were hoping to try. So we were just walking one day and we randomly saw this lady that looked just like Belen, the 17 year old, but we didn't actually know her mom so we didn't know if that was really her. But we went up to talk to this woman anyways and had a great conversation with her. The next day we asked Belen if that was her mom, and it was. It was so great that we were able to have a positive contact with her mom, because we are super friendly and we always be making people laugh, you know us, having a good, friendly ambient. But I guess we made a good first impression. Then, on fast Sunday, we were fasting as a zone for all of the people that we were teaching, fasting for all of our people. And then later, as we were walking to get dinner from our pensionista, we saw Belen's mom again in a bodega (grocery store). We stopped to say hi and ended up talking to her for about 45 minutes to an hour. She is really strong and faithful in another Christian religion, but we shared our testimonies with her and told her how we felt about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When we were done talking, her heart was softened, and she was really open about letting her daughter get baptized. She had changed her mind and it was all because of the power of the fast.
